The Question Everyone Asks
If you’ve been around the gym long enough, you’ve probably heard this debate:
“Barbells are for serious lifters.”
“Dumbbells are safer and more functional.”
I just got asked this question this week: “Have you ever written anything about the benefits of dumbbells vs barbells as we age? Can we get the same benefits?
That led me to this question, which is basically the same thing.
Can you get everything you need, especially for longevity and health, using just one of them?
So here we go…
1. Barbells: The Foundation of Lifelong Strength
Barbells are designed for load, and load is what drives adaptation.
Squats, deadlifts, and presses aren’t just gym exercises; they’re movements that maintain bone density, muscle mass, and nervous system function as we age.
Barbell training allows for:
